چکیده

Tomographic reconstruction of the threedimensional auroral arc emission is used to obtain vertical and horizontal distributions of the optical auroral emission. Under the given experimental conditions with a very limited angular range and a small number of observers, algebraic reconstruction methods generally yield better results than transform techniques. Di€erent algebraic reconstruction methods are tested with an auroral arc model and the best results are obtained with an iterative least-square method adapted from emission-computed tomography. The observation geometry used during a campaign in Norway in 1995 is tested with the arc model and root-mean-square errors, to be expected under the given geometrical conditions, are calculated. Although optimum geometry was not used, root-mean-square errors of less than 2% for the images and of the order of 30% for the distribution could be obtained. The method is applied to images from real observations. The correspondence of original pictures and projections of the reconstructed volume is discussed, and emission pro®les along magnetic ®eld lines through the three-dimensionally reconstructed arc are calibrated into electron density pro®les with additional EISCAT measurements. Including a background pro®le and the temporal changes of the electron density due to recombination, good agreement can be obtained between measured pro®les and the time-sequence of calculated pro®les. These pro®les are used to estimate the conductivity distribution in the vicinity of the EISCAT site. While the radar can only probe the ionosphere along the radar beam, the three-dimensional tomography enables conductivity estimates in a large area around the radar site.

Survey of conditions for artificial aurora experiments at EISCAT Tromsø using dynasonde data

We report a brief survey on conditions for artificial aurora optical experiments in F region heating with O-mode at the EISCAT Tromsø site using dynasonde data from 2000 to 2017. The results obtained in our survey indicate the following: The possible conditions for conducting artificial aurora experiments are concentrated in twilight hours in both evening and morning, compared with late-night h...

Coordinated optical and EISCAT observations of black aurora

[1] An image intensified video camera was used in conjunction with the EISCAT radar in Tromsø, Norway, for detailed studies of non-sheared black aurora on March 5, 2002. While it is known that a downward field-aligned current will decrease the ionospheric plasma density, any measurable effect will depend on the noise-level in the density measurements and the background density. The results show...

Feasibility study on Generalized-Aurora Computed Tomography

Aurora Computed Tomography (ACT) is a method for retrieving the three-dimensional (3-D) distribution of the volume emission rate from monochromatic auroral images obtained simultaneously by a multi-point camera network. We extend this method to a Generalized-Aurora Computed Tomography (G-ACT) that reconstructs the energy and spatial distributions of precipitating electrons from multi-instrument...

Positive storm effects in the dayside polar ionospheric F-region observed by EISCAT and ESR during the magnetic storm

EISCAT/ESR radar data and in situ FAST and POLAR satellite observations are coordinately analyzed to investigate positive ionospheric storm effects in the dayside upper F-region in both the polar cap and the auroral oval during the magnetic storm of 15 May 1997. An ionization enhancement, lasting for about 2.5 h, appeared first over the EISCAT site around magnetic noon; about one hour later, a ...

Simultaneous measurements of high-frequency pump-enhanced airglow and ionospheric temperatures at auroral latitudes

Simultaneous measurements of enhanced airglow at 6300 Å and plasma temperatures from transmitting a powerful high frequency electromagnetic pump wave from the EISCAT-Heating facility into the ionospheric F region at auroral latitudes are reported. The airglow was detected with the Auroral Large Imaging System in northern Sweden and the background plasma parameter values were obtained with the E...
